💡 What Is WCAG? WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. It’s a global standard designed to make web content — including blog posts like this one — accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities.
That means ensuring your content works for:
  • People using screen readers
  • Keyboard-only users
  • Readers with dyslexia or cognitive differences
  • Visitors with visual impairments, colour blindness, or motor challenges
Accessibility isn’t just about compliance. It’s about inclusion.

🧠 Why Blog Accessibility Often Gets Overlooked. Blogs are often created quickly, using themes or CMS templates (like Weebly, WordPress, etc.). Writers focus on message and tone — but forget the experience for people who:
  • Can’t see the images
  • Can’t click small buttons
  • Don’t use a mouse
  • Can’t process large blocks of text easily
But think about this:
Your insight could change someone’s day — and they may never get to read it… unless it’s accessible.

✅ 6 Ways to Make Blog Posts WCAG-Compliant
Here’s how we do it at Avatarman.uk, and how you can do it too:
  1. Use real headings (H1, H2, H3)
    • Helps screen readers navigate
  2. Ensure colour contrast
    • Dark text on a light background is best
  3. Add alt text to images
    • Describe visuals so screen readers can interpret them
  4. Enable keyboard navigation
    • Test your page with just the Tab key
  5. Avoid vague links or buttons
    • Say “Read our accessibility guide” instead of “Click here”
  6. Offer a ‘Listen’ button
    • Let people hear your blog — not just read it (like the one at the top of this post)

Not everyone consumes content the same way. Some prefer listening while walking. Others use screen readers daily. Some are simply tired. By adding a
Listen button to our blog, we’re saying:
“You’re welcome here — however you experience the web.”
